Chrysler Timing Belt Replacement Cost – All Models

A timing belt also known as drive belt or cambelt was first build in the middle of the 1960’s in America invented by Pontiac, he created a straight-six engine that is the first car having a rubber timing belt. Before this timing chain was equipped in every four-stroke engine. It is responsible to ensure that the camshaft and crankshaft are synchronized with each other and valve timing is correct at all the time, otherwise it will disturb the engine performance, so engine will either run poorly or not run at all.

Advantages of using timing belt is that it is very strong and quiet, but sometimes it will wear out. So mostly it is recommended by automobile manufacturers that belt should be replaced after every 60,000-100,000 miles.

Timing Belt working in Car

Timing belts are now also being used to control vehicle’s power steering and water pump, along with the traditional use to control valve timing of the engine. There are four key phases or strokes in a standard four stroke engine, so timing belt is responsible for changing the strokes and to ensure that the valves are opening and closing at the right time. The four stroke are:

  1. The Intake Stroke
  2. The Compression Stroke
  3. The Combustion Stroke
  4. The Exhaust Stroke

Depending on the make of the vehicle, the timing belt rests on a crankshaft pulley and either one or two camshaft pulleys. Crankshaft pulleys also turn when crank turns, this makes the timing belt moves too and this then helps the camshafts to turn.

It is the camshafts responsibility to control the position of all important valves.

Valve timing will be of if crankshaft and camshaft are out of sync and this will result in the valves open or close during incorrect engine stroke. It will bring disaster for engine and maybe results in:

  1. Bending the valve
  2. Bending a piston rod
  3. Destroying the piston

Timing Belt Symptoms

One will not have to face any mishap with timing belt or chain if it is maintained properly. So how would we get to know that problem is arisen? Your car will tell you timing belt symptoms. You need to observe and check from mechanic.

Well, when engine is starting or shutting down, this is the time when a timing belt usually breaks because belt tensioner giving more than it is greatest on the belt at that time. If the engine is non-interference, normally the only need is to just install a timing belt kit. But in interference engine some damage will must happen probably.

Severity of the damage will depends upon the speed of engine at the time when belt is thrown. Possible damage could be some bent valves and/or broken valves guides, if it happens on startup or shutdown. If the engine doesn’t stopped and still left working at a high rpm, then the valves will likely break off, bounce around the cylinders, bend the connecting rods and may destroy the piston. As the piston breaks, the connecting rods will begin to push holes in the oil pan and the engine block, this will eventually cut the engine apart and you guess it right, it is not possible to repair.

Timing Belt Cost for Chrysler Cars

To keep yourself away from the sudden disturbing situation in the middle of the road because of crash of pistons and valves fighting and hitting with each other, the timing belt should be replaced on time, roughly around after every  40,000 to 150,000 kilometres, even it’s a big pain on the wallet. The timing belt is one of the most expensive service any vehicle will go through but it should be replaced when recommended.

The average cost starts around $250 and can be up to $1000 if other parts removal also required to reach the timing belt. You can still save your labor cost by replacing drive belt yourself.
