Nissan Timing Belt | Chain Belt Replacement Cost – All Models

A timing belt is a closed rubber-made belt with a sawtooth structure from insides that is vital for the working of every internal combustion engine. Earlier in the 19th century, most of the vehicles were designed with a four-stroke engine process used timing chains to support the spinning motion that aids gas engines. Later on, in the 1960s, Pontiac produced the first straight-six engine that used the timing belt. Since 1990, automotive manufacturers have opted in favour of timing belts. It is placed at the front facet of the vehicle engine.

The four-stroke cycle consists of an intake stroke, a compression stroke, a power stroke, and an exhaust stroke. The complete cycle is accompanied by the rotation of camshaft and crankshaft; it provides a mechanical timing that underpins and controls the movement of pistons and valves present inside the engine cylinder. The simultaneous working of valves and piston needs to be precise.

Timing belt ensures the accurate motion of the camshaft and crankshaft to maintain the synchronization of the running engine. Its strong rubber material includes nylon-reinforced straps that are continuously in motion inside the motor. Timing belt provides a linkage between the crankshaft and camshaft. It is advantageous to use the timing belt to enhance the separation between the cam and crankshaft as some engines might have multiple camshafts.

Due to their constant revolution, they are chances of belt wear and tear. Therefore, every vehicle manual has a specific mileage limit for timely replacement of timing belts. There are some symptoms that can help a car mechanic or an automotive expert to indicate the critical situation of a timing belt.

  • Timing belts are booth belts with teeth that grip the gears as they revolve. Timing belt begins to snap if these teeth become insufficient or start to fall. This can cause the teeth to fall upon the gears and produce a jolt in the engine. As the camshaft timing will be altered, this would cause the Rough Idling of engine symptoms.
  • Timing belt worn out can alter the engine fire rate. If the belt slips onto the camshaft, it will diminish the timing of cylinders to open and close soon. This will cause a misfire. The belt should be replaced immediately. If not timely replaced can lead to permanent engine damage.
  • The breaking of timing belt also leads to the decline of oil pressure. When the belt synchronization is lost, there is a possibility of camshaft breakdown. The broken piece can fall on vehicle’s oil pan, causing an oil pressure drop. This happening can cause the complete engine failure. To recover from such a situation, it is required to rebuild the motor.

Replacement of the timing belt depends on the manufacturers like BMW Cars and Dayco Belts. Usually, it ranges from 60,000 miles to 5 year’s limit. NISSAN vehicles have different time of replacement depending upon their engine type. NISSAN has engine different engine versions ranging from 1.5 to 3.3 that includes Diesel, DOHC and SOHC type.

Some of its old engines do not require belt replacement as they may be using timing chain, while others have a range of 60,000 or 105,000 miles.  Owner must replace their drive belt before times runs out. This drive belt replacement intervals timing are ideal for nearly 90% of cars. It is easy to replace drive belt at home or find belt replacement mechanic.

Timing belt cost is subjected to labor rates, work hours and engine type. Small engines incur a less replacement cost than larger SUV or truck. Replacement cost for NISSAN timing belt varies from $363 to $526. Labor costing range from $281 to $378. Different price parts are estimated between $82 and $148.
